One Arranged Murder is story of two friends Keshav and Saurabh, who are best-friends, flatmates, colleagues and runs a detective agency. Keshav who lost her girlfriend(ex) in the previous book of this franchise, its time for Saurabh to now. On the day of Karva Chauth, his soon-to-be wife was found dead after falling from the terrace. Yes, Saurabh's fiancé is dead. How? Was it an accidental fall/slip or someone killed her? Is that all? No, Chetan Bhagat also has few subplots which weren't convincing as the last part and felt like page filler at times.
The story started with their post Zara Lone- case and not gonna lie, started well but somewhere in the middle felt it got carried away, more than getting carried away, it was 'predictable'. The thriller factor in The Girl in Room 105 was missing here as the duo explored different places, scenarios for their investigation which was majorly missing. Despite having more characters, and wider environment felt like it was all happening inside 4 walls. Given the story of the prequel how the duo cracked the case, the investigation never picked up pace in this. It was flat with same pace, but wasn't going in the opposite direction.
Alright, does it mean One Arranged Murder is bad? No. Obviously not. It was good, perhaps I expected more after reading GiR105. His articulacy, mix of hindi and sense of humour worked well. The well established character from prequel; Keshav, Saurabh and ACP Rana (Inspector in GiR105, who got promoted for cracking Zara's case, well the duo did actually) but the arc was good. Keshav had a proper arc, it was very relatable and it was very connect-able with Keshav- the character. Political jokes worked as well. The narration which was mostly through Keshav's pov was experiemented with Saurabh and Anjali in this story. The ingenuity switch between narration in the beginning was perfect, as said it started really well.
I was told that the author adds himself and IIT, Delhi onto his stories but it was missing here. Since it was a sequel, he felt it would be forceful to have one, may be!? Well that's it from my side with a disappointment with this outing. One Arranged Murder is a okay-ish pacy drama with not so very unexciting reveals and with a bigger backdrop compared to its prequel it lacked the 'mystery quotient' and failed to capitalize on the advantages of its established characters. Guess have to step up back from his books and read something else to rejuvenate. Until then, see you soon with another book.
With love
